Divorce Mediation

When we decide to end our marriage it can feel as if our only choice is to involve lawyers, litigation, and court to make sure it’s “done right.” However, this process can quickly become adversarial and result in a judge making decisions about how you will live your life for many years to come.

I offer a more peaceful and healthier alternative through my divorce mediation services. I will guide you through making important decisions about childcare/custody and division of assets in a way that works for you and your family. Even if your relationship is already contentious, I will honor each of your autonomy and facilitate mutual respect for each other.

Once I have helped you make all necessary decisions, I will provide you with a document that can be used to file an uncontested divorce with the courts. Note, I do not offer divorce mediation services to couples I have seen previously for therapy but I can provide referrals if needed.

Divorcing with Children

In my divorce mediation process, I will guide you through creating a mutually agreeable timeshare plan. This process includes establishing what will happen normally week to week as well as when there are exceptions such as vacations, holidays, or birthdays. I will facilitate coming to an agreement on any topics of contention such as where to send children to school or what sports they may play. I also will calculate the child support amount based on the laws of the state in which you are filing for divorce. This information will be used as part of financial calculations when deciding on division of assets.

Mediation During High Conflict Divorce

High conflict couples can benefit from mediation services over litigation, especially if they are looking to preserve as much good will as possible. Some couples believe that they cannot use a mediator unless they are in complete agreement and are not fighting. This is not the case and I am uniquely qualified to facilitate an environment that is conducive to making tough decisions due to my extensive experience as a couples therapist. As such, I welcome even couples who find it hard to be in the same room together. Please be advised that I do not work with couples when there is a safety concern, such as when an order of protection against one partner is involved. I am happy to provide referrals to supports in this case.

Divorce Mediation Involving Lawyers

I welcome the inclusion of lawyers guidance while doing mediation work. You are welcome to invite your lawyer to attend mediation sessions or to consult with your lawyer between sessions and prior to signing the memorandum of understanding. I will conduct the mediation process the same way with or without lawyers presence.

Post-Divorce Mediation/Renegotiation

Some couples find that an area of contention happens post-divorce finalization. This may happen due to many unexpected issues such as an unanticipated child-care need or relocation due to a job. I work with divorced spouses to resolve these issues outside of the courtroom so that they can move forward with their lives in a calm and healthy manner, even when the unexpected happens.
